If you’re anything like me, it’s always tempting to want to buy and try the very latest and greatest technology around. And it’s a continual source of wonder just how fast the online world in particular moves and evolves. Those shiny new toys always seem to offer some new nirvana, and you can feel racked with fear and that sense of missing out if you don’t immediately jump on every bandwagon that drives past.
Ok – might be time for the truth. Those shiny new toys provide a fantastic distraction from the day-to-day things that are fundamental to the growth of your business. Those things that you know need your attention every day, day after day, but perhaps don’t seem as exciting as all things that glitter.
Even in this speed of light-paced world, good things and good results come from consistent, focused hard work over time. That fundamental truth never changes. If you suffer from ‘shiny new toy’ syndrome it might be time to recognise that this approach to business doesn’t replace the need for a sound, comprehensive business plan.
There is always something new to take all your time if you let it, but the most successful business owners and managers tend to be the ones that can stay focused over the long term. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stay on top of new developments, just that it might be worth allowing a certain amount of time each week or month to this, and letting the market play out a little so you can get a better sense of what offers real value, and what is just smoke.
Remember – it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
